What the tutorials teach

All three tutorials agree that the frontside tailslide is essentially a frontside 180 onto the ledge with the weight almost entirely on the tail, and that a slight approach angle (10-20 degrees) is critical. They converge on keeping your center of gravity close to the tail before and during the pop to reduce the tail's travel distance and prevent it hitting the side of the obstacle. Where they differ: SKATE HACKS and CCS focus on the shoulder wind-up and practical setup cues, while whythetrick goes deeper into why the weight distribution matters biomechanically, explaining how turning radius shrinks as center of gravity moves closer to the tail.

  • Weight on the tail side before AND during the pop; leaning toward the obstacle is the single root cause of most lock-in failures
  • Approach at a slight angle only (10-20 degrees max), so you do not have to over-rotate and the momentum carries you through the slide
  • Wind up your shoulders like a frontside 180, pop, and commit nearly all weight to the tail on landing
  • Wax the ledge well; a sticky surface kills the slide, especially at lower speeds

Frequently asked

What should I learn before the Tailslide?
The tailslide builds on Ollie. Get that consistent first, since the tailslide reuses the same pop, balance, or flick.
Is the Tailslide hard to learn?
The tailslide is an intermediate trick. It gets much easier once you can already ollie.
