What the tutorials teach

Every source agrees the suski grind is a backside hybrid, not a clean lock into any single named trick: your top half turns through the grind the way it would for a backside tailslide, but you pop onto the ledge or rail the way you would for a backside 50-50, landing in a small pinch pocket somewhere between the two. The entire trick comes down to getting the wheel closest to the ledge or rail pinched into that pocket, with your weight loaded onto the arch or heel of your back foot directly over that wheel, while your upper body leans away from the obstacle (shoulders open, butt out) to counterbalance the heel-side pressure holding the lock. Approach nearly parallel with only a slight angle: too straight and the trucks won't lock, too sharp and you'll miss the pinch or lock in wrong. Once you're in it, freeze your body completely, there is no wiggle room like a manual, any twisting or standing up ejects the board. The general pinch-and-freeze mechanics of a crooked grind or overcrook transfer directly to this lock even though those tricks pinch the opposite truck. Exit by following your body weight out in whatever direction it's already falling, or with a small nollie-style pop.

  • Get a solid backside 50-50 and backside tailslide dialed first, the suski lives exactly in between those two motions
  • Approach nearly parallel with only a slight angle, too straight and the trucks won't lock, too sharp and you'll miss the pinch
  • Pinch the wheel closest to the ledge or rail into the small pocket between a backside 50 and a backside tailslide, don't aim for a clean lock into either one
  • Load your weight onto the arch or heel of your back foot directly over that pinched wheel, that single contact patch is the whole trick
  • Lean your upper body away from the ledge or rail, shoulders open, butt out slightly, to counterbalance the heel-side pressure holding the lock
  • Keep your top half turning like a tailslide while your pop stays like a backside 50, don't let your shoulders close early or you'll turn out to fakie
  • Freeze your body completely once locked in, there's no wiggle room like a manual, any twisting or standing up will eject the board
  • Lightly wax the ledge where your tail or wheel will scrape, and exit by following your body weight in whichever direction it's already falling
