What the tutorials teach

Across every source, the salad grind is a frontside or backside 5-0 grind that gets tweaked and pinched to the side into a near-bluntslide diagonal, with weight loaded onto the heel-side wheel of the back truck instead of spread evenly across the grind. A solid 5-0 (or 50-50) on the relevant surface and stance is the prerequisite everyone names, since the salad grind pops and locks in from the exact same spot, just with an added turn or hip twist. Approach at a shallow, near-parallel angle on transition or just under 45 degrees on rail and curb, keep shoulder discipline matched to the variant, and turn only enough to settle into the pinch: too much rotation drops the trick into a blunt slide or backside blunt, too little leaves you in a plain 5-0. Exit by easing pressure gradually rather than snapping out.

  • Master a solid frontside or backside 5-0 (or 50-50) on your chosen surface before attempting the salad grind, it's the same entry, just turned
  • Pop and lock in as if you're going for a straight 5-0, then add a slight turn or hip twist to settle the board into the pinched salad position
  • Load your weight onto the heel-side wheel of the back truck rather than distributing it evenly across the grind
  • Keep the turn subtle: too much rotation drops you into a blunt slide or backside blunt instead of holding the salad
  • Approach at a shallow, near-parallel angle on transition, or just under 45 degrees on a rail or curb, so your body is already pointed the direction you're locking in
  • Discipline your shoulders to match the trick: keep them open toward your direction of travel on ramps, and slightly closed on rail and curb variants so you don't overshoot the pinch
  • Point your back foot slightly forward as you lock in on rail or curb variants, since a squared back foot fights the pinch
  • Exit by easing pressure gradually, either riding straight out or letting the twist complete into a natural 180, rather than snapping out of the grind

Frequently asked

What should I learn before the Salad Grind?
The salad grind builds on 5-0 Grind. Get that consistent first, since the salad grind reuses the same pop, balance, or flick.
Is the Salad Grind hard to learn?
The salad grind is an advanced trick. It gets much easier once you can already 5-0 grind.
