What the tutorials teach
All three coaches agree the McTwist is built on a backside air with a mute grab, and that you should not attempt it until that air is dialed and going high. There is unanimous advice to take the first attempts into a foam pit or mat rather than straight to concrete, and to accept that slams are part of learning it. The rotation itself is described as coming from the upper body, with Braden Stelma being most specific: duck the head and spin the shoulders once you are above coping. Jett Eaton offers the most useful conceptual breakdown, splitting the trick into a front flip plus a one and a half twist that you learn separately on a trampoline before combining. Dalton Dern is the most specific about terrain and prerequisites, calling for mute airs and mute 360s first and naming a vert ramp or a seven to eight foot quarter pipe with at least a foot of vert as the right place to learn. They differ slightly on the pop: Braden Stelma suggests scraping the tail early on to help the flip and avoid clipping before moving to a clean pop, while Dalton Dern says not to ollie at all and instead to snap the tail into your hand. Everyone agrees that beyond the initial snap the trick moves too fast to think about, so commitment does the rest.
- Have a high backside mute air dialed before you try this, with the front hand grabbing between your foot and knee
- Practice the front flip and the one and a half twist separately on a trampoline, then combine them
- Do the first attempts into a foam pit or mat, and wear pads
- Spin from the upper body: duck your head and turn your shoulders once you are above coping
- Do not ollie into it; snap or scrape the tail so the motion feeds the flip, and start below coping before taking it higher
- Learn it on a vert ramp or a seven to eight foot quarter pipe with at least a foot of vert, and spot your landing as you go higher
