What the tutorials teach
Across the shove-it, step-off, kickback, and 360 variants that share the underflip name, the catch is driven entirely by the back foot scooping the board into rotation and then flicking it up from underneath in one continuous motion, never a hard kick, while the front foot's only real job is clearing out of the way so the board has room to travel. The single hardest skill named across every source is timing: committing the back foot to the catch too early stuffs the flip, too late lets the board spin out from under you or land primo. Every tutorial recommends isolating the underflip catch on its own, sliding the back foot under a stationary board and flicking it up like a heel flip, or stepping off with the front foot first, before combining it with a kickflip's pop and flick, and building on an already-solid kickflip and shove-it or kickback makes the combined motion far easier to learn.
- Treat the underflip as a scoop-and-flick with your back foot, not a hard kick, or the board will fly out from under you
- Keep your back toes hanging slightly off the tail edge so your foot naturally slides underneath the board as it rotates
- Let the board's rotation start before you commit your back foot to the catch, rushing the timing is the most common failure across every variant
- Your front foot's only job is clearing out of the way, put your focus on the back foot's scoop and flick rather than a second flip motion
- Isolate the underflip catch by itself first: set the board down, slide your back foot underneath, and flick it up like a heel flip before adding any pop
- If you land primo, the board flipped too much or too little, adjust the flick force through repetition rather than changing your foot setup
- Practice the motion standing still before taking it rolling, and drill it landing with just one foot before committing both feet
- Learn a kickflip and a shove-it or kickback first so the two motions the underflip combines are already familiar in your feet
