What the tutorials teach

All three coaches agree the invert is a mute grab with the front hand taken between the legs, with the other hand planted, and that the grab and the plant happen together before any rotation starts. Everyone stresses that your weight has to be genuinely stacked over the planted hand: Tony Hawk and Bucky Lasek name leaning off to the side as the classic error, and Lizzie Armanto describes it as trusting your hand to hold you. There is broad agreement that a real vert ramp or pool is required, with Transition Trick Tips being emphatic that the same motion on a small mini ramp is a hand plant and will not transfer upward. They differ on progression: Transition Trick Tips wants hundreds of reps at the very bottom of the ramp and a slow climb over months, RIDE says it starts low but the technique genuinely changes as you go higher, and Lizzie Armanto says the frontside version has no real way to work up to it beyond committing. The frontside variant also needs a much more aggressive push off the coping, where the backside version can be more or less fallen into. All three agree the hardest part is mental, and that half committing is what actually hurts you.

  • Grab mute with the front hand between your legs and plant the other hand at the same instant; both must be set before you start rotating
  • Stack your weight directly over the planted hand, not off to the side, and trust that hand to hold you
  • Do hundreds of reps at the bottom of the transition first, then raise the height a little at a time across sessions
  • Use a proper vert ramp or pool; the small ramp version is a different trick and the feel will not carry over
  • Trace a rainbow shape around your planted hand and straighten your arm at the peak, worrying about the landing before the stall
  • Commit fully; half in and half out is where the trick goes wrong, and the back truck hanging up is a fear rather than a real risk

Frequently asked

What should I learn before the Invert?
The invert builds on Axle Stall. Get that consistent first, since the invert reuses the same pop, balance, or flick.
Is the Invert hard to learn?
The invert is an advanced trick. It gets much easier once you can already axle stall.
