What the tutorials teach
Both coaches agree the indy grab is simply an ollie with a grab added, so nothing changes about the pop or the foot placement and the only prerequisite is a comfortable ollie. Each of them describes reaching down mid air, taking hold of the board and then releasing it before landing, and both treat the release as the important detail: Zack Whyel wants you to let go on the way down so you can land on the bolts with bent knees, while Isaac Thompson frames the same release as protecting your fingers from being crunched on impact. They differ mostly in detail level. Zack Whyel adds the useful preparation drill of practicing the bend-and-grab standing still on flat ground, sets expectations that the first attempts are more of a tap on the edge of the board than a real grab, and points you toward banks and the quarter pipe where the extra hang time lets you hold it longer. Isaac Thompson specifies the hand instead, the back hand, which is the right hand for regular riders, and is candid that this is a fun trick rather than an important one.
- Have your ollie dialed first; the indy grab is that same ollie with a grab added and no change in foot placement
- Practice bending down and grabbing the board while standing still on flat ground, because that is the same motion you use in the air
- Grab with your back hand, the right hand if you ride regular
- Let go of the board on the way down so you land on the bolts with bent knees and do not crunch your fingers
- Expect early attempts to be a tap on the edge of the board; the grab lengthens as your ollies get higher
- Take it to banks and the quarter pipe once flat ground works, since the extra air makes the grab much easier to hold
