What the tutorials teach

Both coaches treat the hippie jump as an early, accessible trick and both build it in stages rather than sending you straight at an obstacle. They agree on the central mechanic: you jump straight up, not forward, and let the rolling board pass underneath you, because jumping forward stops or kicks out the board. Both stress bending the knees, on the crouch before the jump and again on the landing, and both want you landing back on the bolts. The progressions differ in emphasis. Braille starts from the board and works outward, using a jumped line on the ground and then a loosely tied shoelace as harmless stand-ins for a real obstacle, and dedicates real time to the hang-up risk with a firsthand ACL injury story. Start Skate School starts even earlier, with jumps on the ground and on a stationary board before adding speed, and adds the cue of watching the board in the air. Foot placement is only specified by Braille, who wants both feet covering all eight bolts with toes slightly hanging off rather than the normal riding stance.

  • Jump straight up, never forward or backward, and let the board roll underneath you to meet you on the other side
  • Put both feet over the bolts before you jump and aim to land back on the bolts with both feet at once
  • Bend your knees deeply before the jump and again on the landing; a stiff landing on a moving board is where the bad falls happen
  • Build up in stages: jump on the spot, then on a stationary board, then with speed, then over a jumped line or a loosely tied shoelace before any real obstacle
  • Watch the board while you are in the air so you can guide your feet back onto it
  • Get the timing right and jump early enough; jumping late is what causes hang-ups, and hang-ups on this trick cause real injuries
