What the tutorials teach

Every source agrees this trick is two separately-masterable motions fused together: a frontside 180 driven mainly by winding and unwinding the shoulders, and a heelflip flick that has to land while the board is already turning rather than before or after it. Back foot placement varies by teacher (some cock it outward on the tail tip, others use a shallow varial-heel pocket, others the standard heel-side pocket) but the underlying goal is the same: generate a toe-side scoop that pushes the board frontside rather than a flat, straight-down pop. Front foot setup mirrors a plain heelflip almost exactly, angled close to perpendicular with the toe near the front edge for the flick. The rotation itself should come far more from the shoulders, winding opposite your spin and then twisting through nearly the full 180 rather than the 90-degree cue used for plain frontside spins, than from the back foot, and the flick lands best once the board has already begun turning, so the flick and the spin finish together instead of fighting each other. Learning the frontside 180 and the heelflip solidly on their own first is the universal prerequisite, and a nose pivot is a legitimate way to finish the rotation while you're still building pop and shoulder commitment.

  • Get a consistent frontside 180 and a consistent heelflip on their own before combining them into this trick
  • Set your front foot in standard heelflip position: angled close to perpendicular to the board, ball of foot on the front edge, toe hanging slightly off
  • Position your back foot to generate a toe-side scoop toward frontside rotation, not a flat pop straight down the center of the tail
  • Wind your shoulders opposite your spin direction as you roll up, then twist through nearly the full 180 as you pop — this trick needs more shoulder commitment than a plain frontside 180's turn-90 cue
  • Let the shoulder rotation drive the spin; the back foot scoop should only be a slight assist, not the main source of rotation
  • Flick off the front toe, the pinky-toe edge, once the board has already started rotating, not before the pop and not simultaneously with it
  • Push the board out in front of you and lean back slightly through the pop so you stay above it instead of diving forward and getting ahead of the rotation
  • If you come up short on the rotation, use a nose pivot to finish turning rather than forcing a bigger pop before you're ready
