What the tutorials teach
Both usable tutorials describe the same trick in the same terms: a hardflip and a backside 180 performed together, with the hardflip mechanics left untouched and the rotation layered on top. Each coach requires the two component tricks first, and both note that rolling away switch is part of the deal, so a comfortable backside 180 matters as much as the flip. On foot placement they agree that nothing changes from your normal hardflip stance, and the flick is the same scissor kick toward opposite wheels. Where they differ is in how they cue the rotation. John Getz starts the backside turn only after the pop, at roughly the halfway point, and lets the foot catching the board pull the remaining rotation around. Lamont Holt sets the intention earlier, using the shoulder above his flicking foot to steer the whole trick and scooping toward that direction on the pop. Holt also offers the more forgiving progression, landing at 90 degrees and pivoting the rest of the way around, along with backside 180 pivot drills off an ollie to the front truck.
- Have both the hardflip and the backside 180 solid before combining them; the ghetto bird is exactly those two tricks at once
- Do not change your hardflip stance for it; keep the usual back foot position and the same scissor kick flick toward opposite wheels
- Let the shoulder above your flicking foot lead the rotation and keep your crouch centered rather than leaning forward or back
- Give yourself an easier target at first: land the board around 90 degrees and pivot out the remaining rotation
- Commit when the board comes back up to your feet, since the hardflip already turns partway backside and your foot catching it carries the rest
