What the tutorials teach

Every source agrees the frontside bigspin is a back-foot trick: it needs to sit on the inside (toe-side) edge of the tail rather than centered, carry noticeably more weight than a normal frontside shove-it, and snap or scoop the board hard so the tail travels out in front of your center of gravity as you pop. The front foot stays largely passive, placed flat or in a heelflip-style position near the bolts, with its only real job being to lift out of the way and then catch, not to steer the flip. Wind your shoulders up before the pop and release the turn as you snap the tail, but remember the body only completes a 180 while the board spins a full 360 (aim to catch around 90 degrees of body turn against 270 degrees of board rotation), so over-rotating your shoulders too early actually weakens the kick rather than helping it. Keeping your eyes on your back foot through the pop, rather than looking ahead, preserves kicking power the same way a soccer player generates more force kicking a ball placed in front of them than behind. Build the frontside pop shove-it and frontside 180 solid on their own first, expect to land it switch, and use a hip, ledge, or small stair set for extra hang time while the full rotation is still inconsistent on flat ground.

  • Set your back foot on the inside (toe-side) edge of the tail, not centered, the same position you'd use for a frontside pop shove-it
  • Load noticeably more weight onto your back foot than a normal frontside shove-it requires, this is what powers the full 360-degree board rotation
  • Keep your eyes on your back foot through the pop instead of looking where you're going, this keeps the kick inside its strongest angle
  • Wind your shoulders up during the roll-up and release the turn as you snap the tail, timing it like a frontside 180
  • Snap or scoop the tail hard enough that the board travels out in front of your center of gravity, not straight down beneath you
  • Keep your front foot flat or in a light heelflip-style position near the bolts, and let it lift out of the way rather than trying to steer the flip
  • Remember your body only turns 180 degrees while the board spins a full 360, aim to catch around 90 degrees of body rotation against 270 degrees of board rotation
  • Have your frontside pop shove-it and frontside 180 solid on their own first, and use a hip, ledge, or small stair set for extra hang time while you're learning
