What the tutorials teach

All three coaches treat the crail slide as a stall or grind you already know with a nose grab bolted on, not as a brand new trick. The shared prerequisite is being able to stand on the coping with the back truck locked, whether that is a frontside 5-0 for The Raddii Zone, a frontside tailslide for David Gonzalez, or a backside tail stall for Ben Raemers. They also agree the grab is committed early and held, with the hand staying on the nose for the whole slide. Where they differ is the entry: The Raddii Zone builds up slowly from a stationary stall and only adds speed and slide at the very end, while Ben Raemers wants speed and a diagonal approach from the start so the board skims and scoops into the coping. The Raddii Zone is the only one who gives an explicit balance cue, pushing with the back toes on the tail against the pull of the front hand. David Gonzalez adds the practical note that a slick, waxed coping matters for whether the board slides at all.

  • Own the stall version first: a frontside 5-0, a frontside tailslide, or a backside tail stall depending on which way you are learning it, before you add the grab
  • Practice the crail grab in isolation, either as a crail drop in or as a touch of the nose during a plain frontside grind, so the grab is not new when you combine the pieces
  • Grab the nose early and keep the hand there for the whole slide instead of grabbing and letting go mid trick
  • Balance by pushing the toes of the back foot flat into the tail while pulling with the front hand; the two working against each other is what holds the lock
  • Wax the coping and expect a lot of missed grabs at first; the trick feels floppy and awkward until the entry becomes routine

Frequently asked

What should I learn before the Crail Slide?
The crail slide builds on Tailslide. Get that consistent first, since the crail slide reuses the same pop, balance, or flick.
Is the Crail Slide hard to learn?
The crail slide is an advanced trick. It gets much easier once you can already tailslide.
