What the tutorials teach
All three coaches teach the caveman the same way: hold the board in your front hand, jump, get both feet onto the board, and land on the bolts with your knees bent and enough forward momentum to roll away. They also all recommend removing the risk first by practicing where the board cannot roll, either on grass or standing still. The difference is how finely they break it down. Never Stop Improving gives the fastest route, holding the nose with the thumb on the grip tape, taking a small running start, and jumping off the back foot while swinging the board under your feet. Braille goes step by step, having you first only throw the board down onto your back foot, then step on slowly, then speed up, then jump, and frames the whole trick as a timing problem between releasing the board, the board meeting your foot, and the jump. Start Skate School focuses on the physical progression from grass to rolling and on bending the knees through both the jump and the landing. Never Stop Improving is also the one that opens the door to variations, noting any grab (indy, melon, tail, mute, cannonball) can start a caveman once the basic version is solid.
- Hold the board with your front hand, thumb over the grip tape, and swing it under your feet as you jump
- Practice on grass or standing still first so the board cannot roll out from under you
- Jump off the ball of your back foot, then place that foot onto the board
- Land bolts with one foot over each set of wheels and your knees bent to absorb the landing
- Build up in stages: throw the board down to your foot only, then step on slowly, then speed it up, then jump
- Carry enough forward momentum that you roll away after landing instead of stopping dead on the board
