What the tutorials teach

All three coaches agree the casper flip is built on a half kickflip plus a scoop, and that kickflips should be solid first. They also agree the front foot does most of the work: it starts near the front bolts, drives the half flip, then stays with the underside of the board and lifts or swings it back over. Where they differ is which half of the trick they treat as the hard part. Skate Warehouse teaches it as one continuous move at slow speed, with the front foot swinging around clockwise to bring the board back under you. Skate Like A Girl comes at it from the casper position itself, drilling the scoop and the push up as separate stationary exercises with the back foot deliberately loose. Braille goes furthest on the back foot, insisting it be perched on the ball toward the front edge of the tail so it can pop fast and then shoot the tail forward, and naming that back-foot hit as the exact thing that makes this a casper flip rather than a hospital flip. All three recommend practicing the pieces standing still or without trying to land before attempting the whole thing in the air, and Braille is clearest that speed of foot movement beats pop height.

  • Get kickflips dialed first; the first half of a casper flip is a half kickflip that you stop early
  • Front foot near the front bolts at roughly a 45 degree angle; slide it halfway but keep it on the board so the deck only flips over rather than all the way around
  • Break it into stationary drills: half flip the board over and set it down, then half flip and land only the back foot, then scoop from the board upside down
  • From the casper position, scoop down with the back foot while pulling up with the front foot; that combined motion is what flips the board back onto its wheels
  • Roll slowly and move your feet fast rather than chasing a big pop; there is too much happening to rely on height
  • If the board keeps coming back without the tail being kicked forward, you are doing a hospital flip, not a casper flip

Frequently asked

What should I learn before the Casper Flip?
The casper flip builds on Kickflip. Get that consistent first, since the casper flip reuses the same pop, balance, or flick.
Is the Casper Flip hard to learn?
The casper flip is an advanced trick. It gets much easier once you can already kickflip.
