What the tutorials teach
The three tutorials agree on the shape of the trick and on the one detail that decides whether you make it: the back truck and back wheels have to clear the rail. Clint Walker is the bluntest about it, saying clipping means you fall no matter what, and that this is the only thing he thinks about. All three approach nearly parallel to the rail with a slight angle, feet in ollie position, and all three separate the pop from the rotation, popping up first and turning the board backside 90 degrees once it is above the rail. The body-position advice is consistent: hips turn into the slide, shoulders stay closer to in line with the rail, and you keep looking in the direction you are sliding rather than at your feet. Balance is centered over the bolts with the rail under the middle of the board, and SKATEDELUXE and Clint Walker both warn that leaning forward or back is what makes you slip out. Skate Warehouse adds the most detail on the rotation itself, sweeping the back end out with the back foot the moment you know the truck will clear and pulling in with the front foot, plus the practical warnings to have backside 180s first and not to over-wax the rail. For progression, Clint Walker suggests starting at the end of a small rail and working further up as it gets comfortable.
- Think about one thing on the way in: getting your back wheels and back truck over the rail, because clipping is what puts you down
- Approach almost parallel with just a slight angle, feet in ollie position
- Pop first and rotate after you are up; turn the board backside 90 degrees only once it is above the rail
- Turn your hips into the slide but keep your shoulders in line with the rail and your eyes down the direction of travel
- Land with the rail under the middle of the board, feet over the bolts, weight centered rather than forward or back
- Have backside 180s comfortable first, start at the end of a small rail, and go out either regular or continue the rotation to fakie
