What the tutorials teach

All three coaches agree that the 360 shove-it is entirely a back-foot trick: the front foot primarily gets out of the way while the back foot generates the full 360 rotation through a combination of downward pop and a sweeping or arcing scoop. The key disagreement is on back-foot toe position: Tom's Tutorials says do NOT hang the toe off the edge (it causes flipping) and keep it centered, while VLSkate and SKATE HACKS say the toe-side pocket with toes hanging off is essential for gripping the board through the rotation. The shared technical insight across all three is the arc or curved path of the back foot: rather than scooping straight backward like a pop shove-it, the back foot must curve in a crescent motion that continues the board's momentum around the full 360. All coaches recommend drilling the one-footed scoop stationary before adding the jump, and identify landing primo as the primary failure mode to guard against.

  • The 360 scoop is an arcing crescent motion, not a straight backward pull: the back foot curves back then sweeps toward the nose to generate the full rotation
  • Practice the one-footed 360 scoop extensively with front foot on the ground before attempting to jump and land: get the board spinning 360 consistently first
  • Keep the back-foot toes in contact with or close to the board through the full rotation to prevent the board from flipping to primo
  • Shoulders stay mostly square: do not turn your upper body to help the spin, let the back foot do all the rotational work
